ABOUT
CRAFTING TABLECLOTH-SIZED DOUGH SHEETS
JUST LIKE GRANDMA
Each week Grandma routinely made tablecloth-sized dough sheets intended for pasta and pastry that covered the oversized dining table and its wall sized companion cabinet. She had a rhythm for fermenting and baking, purchasing fresh, seasonally and local, and displaying always with an eye towards perfection. Our grandparents came from generations of making their own food. Home cooking and baking was the default setting. Their primary staples of dairy, meat, fruits and vegetables came from their own gardens, their own farms and/or that of their neighbors’ farms and gardens.
We sought out to create a bakery that echoed grandma’s style and quality of baking including the commitment to time-honored techniques and processes. Accordingly, all our pastries are naturally fermented with levain for easier digestion, better flavor and longer shelf life. A glimpse of our bakery cycle includes buying fresh and producing fresh just like grandma did with frequent shopping and deliveries in a never-ending rotational dance of scaling, preparing and processing, a final dusting of powdered sugar or sprinkles to display goods ornately, all this and more resulting in a shared experience with family and friends.
The bakery menu was inspired by our grandparents, our intercontinental travels, and living in the Poconos, a green canvas dotted with lakes and cabins, etched with winding rivers and mountain terrain and regardless of season, endless scenery and crisp mountain air. We invite you to stop by our little corner of Honesdale, get acquainted and discover a wide range of baked goods including a pillowy cinnamon roll, a lemon cookie, our signature whipped cream used on products such as a Viennese coffee and creamed cakes, a chocolate cake milkshake made with both our homemade gelato and in-house chocolate cake, a blondie with swirls of Argentine Dulce de Leche and even a Sicilian Affogato or an espresso drowned gelato.
THE BRAND
BATTENBERG BAKERY brand was inspired by the Battenberg Cake, a whimsical and darling English tea cake. The rectangular tea cake is fully encased in marzipan and when sliced, it reveals alternating dual-colored quadrants of sponge cake. The Battenberg Cake was purportedly created in celebration of a royal wedding involving a German prince, Louis of Battenberg.
